How Adelaide Became a Global Brand Through Its Fringe Festival

The Adelaide Fringe, Australia’s largest arts festival and the second-largest Fringe festival globally has transcended Adelaide’s reputation as a quiet, regional city to a vibrant global brand. Additionally, through its extensive cultural offerings and substantial economic contribution, the festival has positioned Adelaide as a vibrant, internationally recognized cultural hub.

Adelaide Fringe has consistently proved its economic significance for South Australia. This year, Fringe contributed a record breaking $197.7 million in economic expenditure for South Australia. Out of this total, $144.2 million is believed to have been new money injected into the economy. Selling over 1 million tickets, this festival also contributed towards 16, 128 jobs. Moreover, a total of $26.7 million was paid directly to artists and venues who took part in the event meaning the significant economic boost reached all levels of South Australian businesses and employees. The staggering numbers here clearly show the importance of this festival to Adelaide’s and more generally, South Australian, economy.

The open-access model that the Adelaide Fringe adopts attracts artists and visitors from all over the world. This inclusivity has enhanced Adelaide’s reputation as a city brand that celebrate creativity and diversity from all over the world. In 2025, more than 60,000 visitors came to Adelaide during the Fringe festivities.

Beyond the obviously impressive footfalls in terms of visitors, revenue and ticket sales, Fringe has reshaped Adelaide’s global identity. Hotels, restaurants and local businesses have continued to benefit significantly from the Fringe. However, more importantly,  the festival has entrenched the brand of Adelaide as a city of bold ideas and inclusivity. In other words, the Fringe has put Adelaide on the global map.  Just like Edinburgh is synonymous with its Fringe festival, Adelaide is now international recognised as a festival city with a cultural brand that transcends its borders.
